The Secret to a Peaceful Holiday Season? A Well-Trained Dog.

Doorbells, houseguests, food on low tables and a front door that never stops opening. The holidays are a stress test for every household dog. A dog with clear expectations sleeps through it. A dog without them spends December being shut in a back bedroom.

The three commands that carry the season

You do not need a competition-level dog to have a calm holiday. You need three behaviors that hold under pressure.

  • Place. Your dog goes to a bed or mat and stays there until released. This is the single most useful command in a busy house.
  • Door manners. No bolting, no jumping, no chaos at the threshold when guests arrive.
  • Leave it. Chocolate, bones, ribbon, tinsel. Every holiday brings something on the floor that should not be eaten.

Start before the guests do

Most owners begin working on holiday manners the week of the party. That is roughly three weeks too late. Behaviors need to be proofed in a quiet room first, then with mild distraction, then with the real thing.

A realistic timeline looks like this:

  • Week one: place and leave it in an empty room, short reps
  • Week two: the same behaviors with the television on and people moving around
  • Week three: doorbell rehearsals with a friend, then a small gathering

Give the dog somewhere to be

A dog with a job is not underfoot. A raised cot in the corner of the room, a chew they only get on busy evenings, and a release word they trust will do more for your holiday than any amount of shushing.

When the house is too much

Some dogs genuinely need a break, and that is not a training failure. A quiet crate in a back room with white noise is a kindness, not a punishment — as long as the dog was taught to love the crate long before the party started.

If your dog struggles with guests, doorbells or food on the counter, our board-and-train programs build exactly these behaviors. Contact Ridgeside K9 Nashville for a free evaluation.
